Boy, the Gossip Girl parents are messed-up

One of the unexpected perks of watching Gossip Girl has been the entanglements of the teen stars’ folks, who won’t be winning Parent of the Year trophies anytime soon. Tomorrow, Dan and Jenny’s mother (played by Susan Misner) makes her first appearance, and estranged-hubby Rufus isn’t too pleased at the surprise intrusion. Seems the artiste has been off “playing the field,” while Rufus looks for comfort with old flame Lily (Serena’s mom)—who already has a little golddiggin’ goin’ on with Chuck’s aloof papa. All of that is child’s play, compared with poor Nate’s drug-addicted dad, newly charged with fraud and embezzlement, and his severely in-denial mom. Nate’s father really needed that Waldorf Hotel account, and since Nate keeps breaking the heart of young Blair Waldorf, mama’s probably gonna cast her cash elsewhere. I’m only on a first-name basis with Rufus and Lily, played by personal favorites Matthew Settle and Kelly Rutherford, whose scenes together are electric. The rest of these elders don’t have to look any further than the nearest beveled mirror to realize why their rich, hot prep-schoolers are confused or out-of-control. I wouldn’t wish their lives on anyone (well, except for the wealth part), but for TV viewers it’s the definition of “guilty pleasure.”
